Community Means Giving Back

“I am not going to hide. Come get me and we’ll fight it out in court. I’m not going to hide. I’m going to protest. I’m going to be me. I have a right. I’m done hiding. We were undocumented for 12 years. Now I’m a U.S. citizen” - Laura Murvartian

“Murvartian founded ‘Fiesta de Libros,’ a book exchange program, to nurture young readers. The book festival, which takes place on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Plaza Fiesta, provides the opportunity for children to read the books arrayed in bins and to exchange books to take home. The program is run by volunteers  — want to practice your Spanish? — and is always looking for book donations.” — ARTS ATL (June 2012)

Laura Stands Up Against Injustice

Laura understands that community means more than showing up at an event. Community means investing your time and support for the people that make an area home. This is why Laura opened up her home to families displaced by hurricane Irma and why she dedicated a mural to her small hometown of St. James, MN. This country welcomed Laura and allowed her to live the American Dream, but Laura believes that this opportunity comes with the responsibility to give back and support those who are finding their own dream.
